Chapter Thirty-One

Jade stared at me with her scarlet and green eyes. Searching for something in my own. “Can we slow down?” she said after a long pause.

I pulled back, letting my grip on her body soften. “Oh, sure,” I replied. Careful to mask my surprise. I’d figured her as absolutely ready for action, given all she’d said.

“I know I talk a big game…”

I nodded, letting her continue. No one seemed to be coming up on us as far as I could hear. This seemed pretty personal. I could shout them away if they did.

“But I’ve never really… you know. Gone beyond this,” she said, gesturing at the two of us.

“I’m in no hurry,” I replied. “Honestly, I was just moving fast because you seemed aching for it.”

“I know. I know. As an imp I have a hard time getting men to come after me, so I play up the naughty angle. Even so, the guys who’ve dated me have been too scared off by Lord Manageer’s sex laws to actually go further than kissing.”

Morons.

Absolute morons.

“Okay,” I said, nodding along.

“Doesn’t that terrify you? The threat of death?” she asked. Her body trembling even more now. With what must’ve been fear.

Maybe it would’ve in my past life. Now I wanted to live. That meant doing whatever the hell I wanted. To have as much fun as I could. Action, music, entertainment, and definitely sex. “I don’t really fear death,” I said plainly. Knowing it to be true.

“Are you just after me for the sex, then?” she asked. There was an unspoken invocation of Ajax Baylor, seductive conman in the question. “Is that what you want from me?”

I stared back at her, opening myself as fully as I could emotionally and physically. Then said, “Baby, I want all of you.” I tapped her head and her heart, then passed my eyes over her body, smiling.

After a few breaths of silence she softened. “Do you really mean that?”

I pondered it for a second. That’s all it took. “Yes. Absolutely. Look, let’s slow it down. I’m not in a huge rush.” I put a bit of space between us. Relaxing myself away from her. “We’ll have that date and take it from there?” I said, raising my eyebrows.

“Really?” she asked, pulling me in closer. Not letting me separate completely.

“Definitely,” I replied. Nodding gently and stroking her hair out of her face. “I was only moving fast because I thought you were dying for it. You put me in barbarian mode all day.”

She turned her head sideways and looked at me down the line of her eyelashes. “Oh, believe me. I am dying for it. Every woman in the realm is. Probably most men too. Not that you’re…”

“No thanks,” I laughed. “I’m not that adventurous.”

She shrugged helplessly. “You’ll have plenty of choices. I’m not the most beautiful girl. Not even in town.”

I put my hand on her cheek. Trying to calm her. “For someone who’s read so many books you’re pretty uneducated on some basic facts,” I teased.
